A TIME OF MYTHS

A TIME OF MYTHS: A NOVEL

Briefly…

Woodstock, 1969: the Festival that defined a decade of peace, love and freedom. The paths of five young English students cross – with devastating consequences. Consequences that eventually reach a climax in an isolated Cretan gorge.

Seventeen years later, in the ‘golden age’ of capitalism, dramatic events conspire to reunite the surviving members, necessitating a perilous return to Greece and to a tiny Greek island, as dangerous secrets and self-deceptions are at last forced into the glaring light…

Steeped in the folklore of the 20th century, A Time of Myths is not solely a historical mystery adventure: it seeks also to examine who we are, and how far we are in control of our actions – and even of our lives.

The story…

Taking two pivotal events, the narrative swings between the 60’s – epitomised by that Festival - and the 80’s and its mores of financial and sexual excess. The lives of three key protagonists are woven around these events, their destinies determined by the violent death of a fourth.

It is 1987 and Nathan is a long term exile on a tiny Greek island - until he receives a letter from an old friend and adversary, begging him to come back to the UK. Initially he refuses, but the scene is now set for a series of encounters that revive guilty memories of a long-gone summer - and of a mysterious death…

Back in 1969, five young students’ paths cross on the way to an iconic Festival, but before it is over, events lead to the group fleeing for their lives to an isolated Greek island. But there, a horrific ‘accident’ splits the group asunder, two of the members never to return to the UK…

And now in 1987 Nathan must reluctantly go back to England and face the consequences, as lethal dominoes, long-held insecurely in place, begin to fall…

A Timeof Myths is a roller coaster ride through key vividly-recreated events of the 20th Century. You can smell the authentic atmosphere of the remote Greek islands, review the sexual exploration of the 60’s,  revel in the Woodstock festival and dabble in the money and sex obsessed milieu of the 80’s.

Ostensively, it’s an adventure story and a murder mystery, interwoven with a searing love story that is played out on the 20th century stage. But dig deeper and it becomes an examination of who we are, and how far we are truly in control. The literary themes of predestination and free will are explored in a complex and literary portrayal of the 20th century, with lessons for how we respond to our 21st century predicament.
